A New Staircase for the Old Armory Musegg

Year
2023
A cast concrete element of the stair, pale with fine aggregate, its profile stepped like two stacked treads.

The Old Armory has been preserved in its current state to protect its local heritage. To showcase the impressive height of the building, an open staircase was designed that incorporates both old and new elements. The original flooring can be seen in the ceiling, and the original panels were used in casting the new concrete walls, which were poured floor by floor.

The walls reach all the way to the roof, where the solid tiles have been replaced with glass tiles to let in natural light. The floor is covered in milk glass, with artificial lighting above it to ensure adequate illumination, even at night or on cloudy days.

The concrete walls and stairs consist of white cement, dark grey local gravel, and white Jura limestone gravel.
